Two Japanese-themed exhibitions open the new year in Westmont’s Reynolds Gallery. “American Viewing Stones: Selections from the James and Alice Greaves Collection” showcases a contemporary adaptation on traditional Japanese suiseki or scholar’s stones. “Kiyoshi Saito Prints” highlights work by an influential Japanese artist that’s part of the college’s permanent collection. Both exhibitions open with a free, public reception on Thursday, January 14, 4-6 p.m., and will be on display through March 11. James Greaves will give a lecture during the reception at 5 p.m.

Discover how ceramics were made, used and traded in early California with the newest exhibit at El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park, Ceramics Rediscovered: Science Reshapes Understanding of Hispanic Life in Early California. Based on a decade-long investigation of ceramic production using archaeological evidence and scientific analysis, the exhibit offers a rare glimpse into daily life during California’s Spanish and Mexican periods (1769-1848). Featuring period artifacts and reproduction pottery, this groundbreaking exhibit traces the evolution of California’s earliest potters and the material culture they helped shape. ($0 - $5)

The Reagan Ranch Center in downtown Santa Barbara, California is open to the general public for tours and visitation on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm. These galleries feature original Reagan Ranch artifacts matched with state-of-the-art, interactive, multimedia exhibits that highlight the history of Ronald Reagan’s quarter-century at Rancho del Cielo and the accomplishments of his presidency.
Over six hours of dynamic multimedia exhibits provide access to exclusive speeches, interviews, radio addresses, and original video presentations. The centerpiece of the gallery is a 28-foot-long interactive “timeline” that gives users the ability to explore the “Western White House” during the 1980s.
