Year Founded:

The Lobero is California's oldest, continuously operating theatre. Founded in 1873 and rebuilt in 1924, this charming, intimate 680-seat theatre is recognized as one of Santa Barbara's architectural jewels and a State and City landmark.
In 2000, the Lobero Theatre Foundation embarked on an ambitious plan to renovate the most fundamental aspects of any theatre's infrastructure: the lighting, rigging and sound systems. We have replaced our "original equipment" (state-of-the-art circa 1924) 3-line hemp rigging system with a 7-line T-wall counterweight, and partially motorized winch driven system. This will provide more versatility in show installation and increase crew efficiency and safety. In addition, we have replaced our nearly 25-year-old dimming system and patch panel with a combination of high-density dimmer-per-circuit system and intelligent moving lighting.
The advantages of these improvements will be readily apparent to all tenants and will incidentally make the Lobero the only one of four major performing arts venues in the city of Santa Barbara to have permanently installed up-to-date production facilities. Most important, these changes are intended to reduce labor and rental costs for the local performing arts groups who call the Lobero their home stage.
Future Upgrades: What lies ahead for this historic landmark? The Lobero Theatre Foundation is constantly addressing the maintenance and renovation needs of the building, and has plans for many more improvements in years to come, including remodeling the back patio and rehearsal hall, rebuilding the paseo on the west side of the theatre, repainting the ceiling and walls, and building more restroom facilities.
